What is Counseling?

Counseling is a confidential process geared towards resolving every day issues related to your personal and academic success. We provide a safe place for you to feel connected and find support. Working together with a caring professional can help you discuss your concerns and can assist you to clarify the kind of changes that might improve your situation.

Services Provided

Individual Counseling
People usually seek counseling to address personal issues that are psychological, developmental, behavioral, social, or academic in nature. Personal issues commonly addressed in short-term counseling are: stress, anxiety, depression, anger, loneliness, guilt, low self-esteem, grief, performance anxiety, perfectionism, low motivation, identity development, gender and sexual orientation issues and adjustment, and life transitions.

Other issues may include: effects of trauma, sexual assault, abuse, spirituality, body image, concerns with alcohol and other drugs, and healthy lifestyle choices.

Multi-Person Counseling
Counseling can help support you in getting what you want out of your relationships. Relationship issues commonly addressed in short-term counseling are: romantic relationship difficulties, beginning and ending relationships, sexual concerns, pre-marital planning, roommate problems, and family issues.

Groups
The group experience can help support your exploration of self, identification of desired change, and allow for the sharing of resources, opportunities, and experiences that are unique to a particular group of individuals. We offer interpersonal, support, and therapeutic groups. [ Group offerings ]

Consultation
We are available to our university colleagues to consult with them about how to foster an environment supportive of the physical, mental, social and spiritual development and health of our students.

Outreach Programming
We try to anticipate the normal developmental needs of college students and offer workshops and guest lectures aimed at preventing typical developmental problems and enhancing student success. We help students get all they can out of their Boise State experience.

Assessments and Screenings
On our website you can find online screening for depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress, alcohol abuse and eating disorders. These free screenings are made available to all Boise State students and employees and are taken anonymously. The screenings are provided so that you may find out-in a few minutes-whether or not professional consultation or counseling would be helpful to you.

We provide ADHD screening and assessment for a fee, as well as assessment referrals when it isn't clear what the best plan is for addressing a problem, or the treatment is not within the scope of our services. We refer to either on-campus services or community resources depending on the identified need.

Referral to the Community
Students whose needs cannot be accommodated within the overall scope of our short-term counseling services are referred to community resources. Similarly, students whose needs require a particular type of expertise that is not offered within the scope of our short-term counseling services are also referred to the community.

Could This Be You?

It's hard for me to make friends.
I wish I had more confidence.
I have a big decision to make.
I feel so alone sometimes.
My parents just don't understand.
I feel so awkward on dates.
Sometimes I feel I can't go on.
I can't seem to find a relationship.
Sometimes I feel like nobody cares.
I'm thinking about dropping out of school.
I'd like to learn more about myself.
We just broke up; I feel hurt and angry.
I'm scared about the future.
Something bad happened; It's hard to talk about.
I'm not happy with the way I look.
I am not sure what occupation is right for me.
I am always nervous and I can't stand it.
Why are people always bugging me about how much I drink/smoke?
My friend is acting weird and I don't know how to help him.

Eligibility

All Boise State University students are eligible for personal counseling, as long as their counseling needs are within the overall scope of our short-term counseling services. However, depending on available services, non-students may only be able to be seen within the context of multi-person counseling with the enrolled student.
