Alisa joined Health Services as a counseling graduate trainee in 2011. Her previous year of counseling internship was spent at a local non-profit community agency. She earned her B.S. in social science from Boise State University in 2003 and in May, 2012, she earned her master's in counseling from Idaho State University. Alisa has been working in the mental health field working closely with children, adolescents and their families. As a counselor, Alisa creates a supportive and empathic yet challenging environment to help clients reach their social, emotional, and interpersonal goals. Alisa’s areas of interest and study include anxiety and depression, self-esteem, multi-cultural studies, student issues, LGBTQI issues, relationship conflict, and issues of loss and grief.

Alison originally joined Counseling Services in 2009, and recently returned; she helped develop the testing and assessment protocols currently in place. She provides counseling and outreach services, assists with testing needs, and other services as needed. Prior to completing her PhD in Clinical Psychology at Wayne State University in Detroit, MI, Alison completed a yearlong program with Henry Ford Hospital where she focused on Health Psychology, completing rotations with consultation liaison services, transplant services, and general outpatient services. In addition to her work at Boise State University, Alison works with a private agency.

Barron Richner

Barron joined the Health Services team in May 2013. Barron is currently enrolled as a graduate student in the master's of health science program with an emphasis in health promotion. Before joining the team, Barron served as a graduate assistant with the Center for the Study of Aging, working with Living Well in Idaho and Fit and Fall Proof programs as a research assistant. Barron also helped with formatting the Idaho Alzheimer's Planning Group's (IAPG) first draft of Idaho's State Plan for Alzheimer's Disease. Before enrolling into Boise State, Barron played tennis at TVCC for two years while serving as Associated Student Government President 2009-2010. After receiving his associate's degree, he transferred to Easter Oregon University and graduated with a bachelor's of science in physical activity and health with an emphasis in health and wellness, June 2012.

She assists the business manager with the daily and monthly receivable and payable accounting functions. Dee has over 15 years of experience in the accounting field. Her goal is to provide accurate and timely financial documents which will allow management to make accurate decisions for Health Services, assist staff with various projects, and help students and vendors with any financial questions that may arise regarding their accounts. Holly joined the Wellness Services team at Boise State in 2013 as a Health Educator. Presently, she is coordinating the employee wellness program. She completed her undergraduate work at Morehead State University in Kentucky where she earned her bachelor of arts in health promotion. Holly then traveled back home to Columbus, Ohio to earn her masters of public health from The Ohio State University. She was an intern and a graduate assistant at the OSU student wellness center before coming to Boise, where her focus was health behavior/health promotion with alcohol and marijuana. She also assisted the athletic peer education group.

Jane rejoined the Health Services staff in April 2013 and is thrilled to be back. In her new position, Jane serves as a part-time staff nurse, providing direct patient care. Prior to this, she served as as Nursing Manager at St. Alphonsus clinics in Caldwell and Fruitland. She was the Nursing Manager at Terry Reilly Health Services from 2000-2005, Nursing Manager at Boise State Health and Wellness from 2000-2005, and Assistant Nursing Manager at Family Practice Residency from 1989 to 2000. Jane holds a bachelor of science in nursing from the College of St.Benedict in St. Joseph, Minnesota. Jane is a member of the Idaho Nurses Association and National Congress of Nursing Managers.

John joined Boise State University in 2010 as the Business Manager. In his current role, he is responsible for providing financial vision and support for Health Services and Campus Recreation. Prior to joining the team at Boise State University, John held various finance and supply chain positions in the Boise region. John worked for 12 years in various finance-related positions for Ore-Ida Foods. He also worked for 6.5 years as the Demand Planner for Cott Beverages, 2 years as the Controller for Blue Chip Engineering, and 2 years as the Controller for ESI. John earned a bachelor of business administration in accounting from the University of Iowa, Iowa City, Iowa.

Dr. Wick joined the Medical Services staff in 2010 as a part-time sports medicine consultant. Working with the current Sports Medicine fellow, he oversees the Health and Recreation Sports Medicine consultation clinic one-half day per week. Dr. Wick also works for St. Luke's Family Health, providing Primary Care and Sports Medicine services. He attended Oregon Health Sciences University in Portland, Oregon, for medical school, followed by his residency in Family Medicine at the Family Medicine Residency of Idaho in Boise, Idaho. Subsequently, he completed his Sports Medicine fellowship also with the Family Medicine Residency of Idaho and Idaho Sports Medicine Institute and has a Certificate of Added Qualifications in Sports Medicine. Dr. Wick also now serves as program director for the Idaho Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship.

Julia joined Health Services in January 2012. She is overseeing the growing clinical operations, processes and flow of the clinic and managing its accreditation and overall quality. Prior to joining the Boise State University team, she worked at St. Lukes Health System as a Nephrology clinic manager and served as the Practice Administrator of a Nephrology group in Boise for six years. She gained much of her clinical expertise and management background at St. Lukes Health System where for fifteen years she worked initially as a staff nurse and then case manager, supervisor and director of an inpatient cardiac telemetry unit. She received her bachelor's of science in nursing from Boise State University and received her master's in business administration from Boise State University in May, 2012.

Highlights:
May 29 -Jun 1, 2012: Attended the 2012 ACHA Annual Meeting in Chicago, Illinois. This year's annual meeting was themed Architects for Change, and included a variety of topics addressed in university health. Overarching goals of the meeting were to increase knowledge, update professional skills, and incorporate best practices in the university health setting. Sections with Boise State representation included: administrative, clinical medicine, health promotion, and nursing.

Juni Eichelberger

Juni serves as a part-time customer service representative (CSR)/receptionist for Wellness Services. She has been working for Health Services since 2004. Juni feels her main goal in this position is to provide students with information and answers that enhance their overall experience at Boise State University. She feels good health is the foundation for a positive educational experience and a pathway to the doors of opportunity. Juni initially was a student at Boise State University and then transitioned into being an employee. Prior to her current role, she has served as an Office Specialist II for the Department of Nursing and as a CSR for Counseling. Juni grew up in Idaho but has lived in California, North Dakota, and Washington State.

Karla serves as the Director of Counseling Services for Health Services. She joined the Counseling Services team in 2000 as a Senior Staff Counselor. She served as the Associate Director of Counseling Services from 2009 - 2012, where she oversaw clinical operations. While at Boise State University, Karla has also served as the Internship Training Program Coordinator and the Coordinator of the Peer Educator Internship Program. Since 1999, she has also served as an adjunct faculty member by teaching various courses in counselor education, psychology, health studies, and general education. Prior to joining Counseling Services, Karla had a private practice working with Basin Community Health Clinic and worked for the Boise County Community Justice Department developing family programs and providing mediation. Jan 19 -Jan 21, 2012: Attended the NASPA (Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education) mental health and substance abuse integrated care conference in Atlanta, Georgia. The conference focused on research that has identified the current issues and trends in collegiate mental health, as well as implications and future directions for best practices in recognizing and responding to these issues and trends in supportive ways that promote student readiness to learn and succeed. Innovative examples of collaboration, prevention, and intervention were emphasized, along with the complexity of ethical issues.

Nov 14, 2011: Attended an ethics workshop that provided an overview of models for practice and thinking critically in relationship to best practices, advanced planning, and high risk situations.

Sep 21 -Sep 23, 2011: Attended the 2011 American Association of Marriage and Family Therapists (AAMFT) annual conference. Theme: "The Science of Relationships." The conference explored the science of relationships from both biological and neurological perspectives, including new data on how modern technology is affecting our relationships with family, friends, and communities. Workshops were offered to enhance the understanding of love and human behavior, and increased knowledge of what occurs in successful long-term relationships.

Prior to joining the Health Services team she worked for St. Al's Medical Group Family Practice in Caldwell where she was the team lead nurse for 2 Physicians and 2 Registered Medical Assistants. Krista joined Counseling Services in January 2013, and serves as a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor. Krista earned her bachelor's degree at the University of Idaho in Recreation and Tourism Management and her master's degree with an emphasis in community counseling from Northwest Nazarene University in 2008. Prior to joining the team at Boise State, Krista worked with diverse populations both in the private sector and in the criminal justice system. She has worked in the mental health field for the past 5 years providing counseling to juveniles who sexually offended, individuals with severe mental health issues, families, children, adolescents, and adults, using various clinical applications that suits each of those populations. Krista's internship experiences included working at Boise State University in Counseling Services where she provided counseling and outreach to students, as well as Terry Reilly Behavioral Health and Sane Solutions. At Terry Reilly Behavioral Health and Sane Solutions, Krista worked with children, adolescent, and adults with a variety of mental health concerns including working with victims of sexual abuse and trauma.

Lauren serves as a Health Educator for Wellness Services since 2013. While earning her bachelor's degree in psychology and philosophy at the University of Pittsburgh, she served as a peer educator for both Health Services and the University Counseling Center. Marika came to the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) Office in 2005 as a Medical Claims Examiner. She has been serving as the SHIP Coordinator since 2010 and oversees the Student Health Insurance Plan, the processing of health insurance waivers, billing claims for Health Services, and providing other general insurance education individually or to the Boise State University community. Prior to joining the team at Boise State University, Marika had over fifteen years of experience in the health insurance industry working for a local company performing everything from claims/adjustment examiner to medical necessity and pre-existing investigations.

Mary joined the Medical Services team in 2003. She currently serves as a Licensed Practical Nurse and Nursing Team Leader. Prior to her work at Boise State University, Mary spent 5 years working for the Department of Health and Welfare where she served as a floor nurse, direct care supervisor, and scheduling coordinator at the Idaho State School and Hospital. Additionally, Mary has had the opportunity to work in a variety of clinical care settings. She has worked in multiple areas of nursing including the hospital, pediatric office nurse, home hospice, pediatric home critical care, staffing nurse, and long-term care nursing facilities. Her diverse work assignments provided a base of knowledge and experience that now allows her to provide a broad spectrum of care for the Boise State University community. Her main focus has always been to provide patients with the best health care available and to educate them on how to effectively care for themselves. She believes patients are their own best advocate and need to be empowered by their health care providers to ask questions and take an active role in their health care management. Mary earned her Associate of Applied Science Certificate in nursing from Eastern Idaho Vocational and Technical College. Additionally, she completed an IV therapy program to allow her to provide infusion therapy for Boise State University students.

Maya joined Boise State Health Services in July 2013 after receiving her master's degree in nursing with a Family Practice emphasis. Prior to joining Boise State she worked as an RN in the emergency department at St. Lukes. During those 22 years she was also actively involved in health education, teaching ACLS, Hazardous Materials,Trauma Nurse, and Emergency Nurse Pediatrics. She further expanded her educational emphasis through adjunct teaching at Boise State in the Chemistry and Nursing departments. In addition to her focus on education, she sought competency in forensic nursing, and obtained her SANE-A certification. This allowed her to work on the Ada Co. sexual assault response team. After 6 years of assault work, she moved her expertise to the high school classroom. There she taught dating violence and healthy relationships to local teens, as part of Women's Life.

Michelle Ihmels

Biography

Michelle joined Boise State in March 2014 to help direct wellness services. Prior to that, Michelle was a professor in the Kinesiology Department at Iowa State University. Her focus is on physical activity, fitness, and wellness across the life spectrum. Her primary areas of research at Iowa State involved childhood obesity and worksite health promotion. Through her worksite health promotion class at Iowa State, she helped direct and provide employee wellness services for faculty and staff. Michelle received her Ph.D. at Iowa State University in Kinesiology, her Master's degree from the University of Louisville in Exercise Physiology with an emphasis in cardiac rehabilitation, and her Bachelor's degree from the University of Louisville in Sport Administration.

Mike Cutler

Biography

Mike earned his doctoral degree in Counselor Education and Practice with a cognate area in Multicultural Counseling was received at the University of South Dakota, Vermillion, SD. He earned his Master of Science degree in Counseling and Guidance with cognate area in Community Counseling was obtained from Northern State University, Aberdeen, SD.

Mike has counseling work experience in a variety of settings, including adolescent youth placement facilities, college/university counseling centers, private-practice community mental health counseling, out-patient treatment for DUI Court referrals, and out-patient treatment for opiate addicted patients. He also logged seven years as a counselor educator with the Boise State University Department of Counselor Education.

Mike has worked toward becoming an effective general mental health practitioner while emphasizing the roles played by culture, addiction, and trauma in the lives of the people who seek him out. Theoretically, Mike describes himself as a practitioner of Adlerian, Solution-Focused, Narrative, Person-Centered, Existentialist, and Family Systems approaches. His counseling approach is humanistic/systemic with a focus on intentionality in the process of counseling to facilitate change. He works to emphasize empowerment/encouragement of the client through the therapeutic relationship and alliance, the development of client self and social awareness, and client self-healing capacity. Mike has also been known to use storytelling, art, and music in therapy.

Pepper Dobson

Licensure: Licensed Massage Therapist (LMT) Certifications/Trainings: Certified Massage Therapist, American Reflexology Certification Board Pepper serves as a part-time medical massage therapist for University Health and Recreation. She provides medical massage and educates clients to be responsive to the multiple dimensions of the mind, body, and spirit. Since 1996, she has studied the art and sciences of massage therapy, reflexology, iridology, kinesiology, manual lymphatic drainage, shiatsu, and other complementary modalities. Pepper feels that working for Health Services is a fantastic way to share the knowledge and skills that help foster and support the well-being of her patients.

RD joined Counseling Services in 2012, and serves as a licensed clinical psychologist. He provides individual, couples, and group counseling services, psychological testing, and supervision of interns. Prior to joining the team at Boise State University, RD worked for 3 years as a licensed psychologist in Southeast Alaska, where he worked within an Alaska Native Health Consortium. He provided individual,couple, group, substance abuse, child and family counseling services through both face-to-face and telebehavioral technology. Additionally, he provided psychological testing for ADHD, cognitive and executive functioning, particularly focused on those who we exposed to alcohol in utero. RD completed his Doctoral Internship at Colorado State University within their integrated student health services. RD earned his Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. RD appreciates and honors the struggles that students must navigate and provides therapy in a collaborative, strength-based approach to facilitate growth and connectivity with their sense of self and their world.

Dr. Wolfe joined Boise State Health Services in September of 2013. She graduated with high honors with a bachelor's degree in microbiology from the University of Montana in 1998. She then went on to complete her medical degree at the University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle, before joining the Montana Family Medicine Residency program in Billings, MT, where she completed her residency training and served as Chief Resident. Dr. Wolfe then joined the United States Air Force, where she served as an active duty physician at Malmstrom Air Force Base in Great Falls, MT. After leaving active duty, she then joined a multispecialty clinic in Missoula, MT, where she practiced for the five years prior to joining the team at Boise State. Drawing upon 14 years of experience in the technology sector, and over 5 years of health information technology experience with St. Luke’s Health System, he offers an unintimidating approach to help his customers navigate technology.

Ron earned his bachelor of science in health informatics & information management from Boise State and is excited to be back on campus. Beginning spring 2012, he joined the college of health sciences team to help prepare students for the ever-evolving health information management profession.

Sandra serves as a nurse practitioner for Medical Services. She joined the Medical Services staff in 2000. Sandra provides general medical care and women's health services to Boise State students. She enjoys working with students and is passionate about being a lifelong learner. Sandra is committed to providing an integrative approach to medicine which combines conventional science with time-honored traditions of healing, looking for maximal results from the least harmful intervention. She believes that health is a state of complete physical, mental, and social well being, not merely the absence of disease. She embraces the concept of a partnership between the patient and practitioner in the healing process. Her goal is to maintain wellness and facilitate inner healing. To do this, she uses all appropriate therapies, both conventional and complementary. Sandra believes that good medicine should be based in good science, be inquiry driven, and open to new paradigms. Prior to working at Boise State University, Sandra served in a variety of nursing roles while on active duty in the army. After leaving the service, she returned to school and pursued a graduate degree in public health. She then worked for several years as a Public Health Nurse Consultant for the State of Washington, Office of STD/HIV/AIDS. Sandra then returned to the army for another four-year appointment as a Public Health Nurse before enrolling in a Postgraduate Nurse Practitioner Program. Upon completion of her studies, she moved with her family to northern California, where she worked as a Nurse Practitioner in rural health. She then began to work in Student Health Services at both Humboldt State University in Arcata, California, and at College of the Redwoods, Eureka, California. In addition to her work with Health Services, she has held positions at Central District Health and served as adjunct faculty for Idaho State University. Sandra graduated with a bachelor's degree in nursing from Humboldt State University and a master's degree in public health from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Later she completed a postgraduate nurse practitioner program at the University of Washington and a 2-year Fellowship in Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona.

Highlights:
Sep 10-Sep 14, 2012: Attended the 40th annual Advances in Family Practice and Primary Care course at the University of Washington which included 5 days of educational opportunities for family practice and primary healthcare providers. The course presented current information on etiology, diagnosis and management of a broad array of primary health care issues including general medicine, pediatrics, sports medicine and women's health care.

Sarah earned her Bachelor's of Science in Psychology from University of Idaho in 2005. She earned her Master's of Social Work from Boise State University in 2007.

Sarah has been a Licensed Master Social Worker since 2007 and earned her Clinical License in 2014.

Sarah's clinical experience includes seven years of working in behavioral health with children, adolescents, adults, and families. Her areas of specialty include comprehensive mental health assessment, forensic mental health evaluations, risk assessment, and crisis intervention. She has experience performing clinical work in both the juvenile and adult court systems.

Sarah uses a strengths-based, solution-focused approach geared to help clients clearly identify and address the root of issues they are currently struggling with while assisting and empowering them to establish a manageable plan to meet their personal goals and promote a healthy sense of balance in life. When dealing with crises, Sarah attempts to keep a calm environment and provides quick assessment in order to effectively evaluate the situation, promote stability in the moment, help individuals to gain insight, and develop an action plan.

Sarah likes to keep her own life in balance by enjoying time with her family, friends, and pets, cooking, reading, and enjoying outdoor activities.

She joined the Wellness Services staff in 2009 as a Medical Massage Therapist, specializing in Swedish, deep tissue, sports, and prenatal massage. Staci has also been employed at Back 2 Life Chiropractic as a massage therapist for the past five years. Prior to becoming a massage therapist, she was a rehabilitation specialist and chiropractic assistant at Back 2 Life for three years. Staci earned a bachelor of science degree in organizational communications and a minor in psychology from the University of Idaho in Moscow, Idaho.

Steven joined Counseling Services in December 2013 and serves as a clinical social worker and Drug and Alcohol Coordinator. She received her associate degree and initial nursing education from Cuesta College in San Luis Obispo, California in 1992, her bachelor’s degree from Boise State University in 2010 and her master’s degree in nursing with a Family Practice emphasis from Idaho State University in 2013 . Prior to joining Boise State, she worked the last 21 years at St. Luke’s Regional Medical Center in telemetry, coronary care, medical imagining and most recently infusion services. Her internship experiences include working at the University of Utah Counseling Center, where she provided counseling to students, faculty, and staff, as well as at Valley Mental Health Day Treatment (VMHDT). At VMHDT she worked with children with behavioral problems and their families. Highlights:
Feb 26 -Feb 28, 2013: Attended the 2012 Depression on College Campuses: Moving Towards Health Self Care Conference in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The conference provided learning and application opportunities surrounding strengths-based treatment, finding a common definition for depression among students on college campuses, as well as different techniques in assisting students with social anxiety in college. Workshops were offered to enhance understanding surrounding issues that affect college campuses and its students across the nation and the services needed to help students to feel more supported.

Verla absolutely loves working with college students and likes to think of herself as a second mom to those students living away from home. Vincent Serio

Biography

Dr. Serio came to Boise State University in 2004 as Director of Medical Services. He sees patients in addition to supervising the medical staff and serving as a liaison to the University for health-related matters. His clinical interests include general medicine, reproductive health, and wilderness and travel medicine. He also performs minor surgery and procedures, including colposcopy, intrauterine device (IUD) placement, and skin biopsies. Dr. Serio grew up in Richmond, Virginia and moved to Idaho in 1995 to train as a Family Medicine physician. After graduating from his residency in 1998, he practiced medicine at Terry Reilly Health Services. While there, he served as lead physician at the Boise Clinic for homeless patients, practiced rural family medicine in Marsing and Homedale, Idaho, and delivered hundreds of babies. In 2001, he joined Saint Alphonsus Medical Group in Meridian, Idaho, where he again practiced full spectrum family medicine. He holds a clinical instructor appointment at the Oregon Health and Sciences University, where he helps train physician assistant students, and has held a clinical instructor appointment at the University of Washington School of Medicine, where he was involved in training medical students. Dr. Serio completed a bachelor of science in biochemistry from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. He was awarded both a degree of master of science in biochemistry and molecular biophysics, and a doctor of medicine degree from the Medical College of Virginia.
